Reflections

The Sound of Silence

Silence has a fascination for many people.  In one of his earlier poems Brendan Kennelly wrote  "once I was the heartbeat of the world I am an outcast now". Meister Eckhart told us that the "nearest thing to God is silence".  We all think we know what silence is but there are several different understandings of what it means.

For one person to say "I was silent" for another person may mean "I was stunned", "I didn't react", "I didn't respond" or 'I held my peace'. Silence can evoke fear in some and awe in others.  Many think of silence as the absence of sound.

Sacred Stillness - A Book of Meditations from the Sanctuary

Compiled by Sr. Stan and Sile Wall (2025)

A book especially close to all our hearts.

Sr Stan never got to see a copy of Sacred Stillness in print, but even in her final weeks she was busy finalising the details of the book.

Working with her long-time friend and collaborator Síle Wall, the two compiled a book of meditations, to offer to the world real, practical, profound and creative meditation practices through a variety of themes and poems.

As they explain in their introduction to the book, ‘Our hope is that these meditations and poems will evoke a stirring of your heart, bringing you into a closer relationship with yourself, the world you are part of and your God, offering you a pathway into stillness where you will find sanctuary.

’Sacred Stillness is intended to provide the reader with numerous ways to connect, and reconnect, with stillness, away from our always-on world of constant distraction, and to offer a pathway into stillness where sanctuary can be found.

All royalties from the sale of this book will go towards furthering the work of the Sanctuary.
